Where It Began

A Trip to Ethiopia That Changed Everything About How We Work

Kesara began not with a roasting drum, but with a conversation in the Gedeo Zone — a forest garden region in southern Ethiopia where coffee trees grow beneath shade canopies that have been tended for centuries. The people we met there weren't suppliers. They were farmers who could describe their processing choices with the precision of craftspeople, and who received almost none of the recognition that precision deserved.

We came home with two things: exceptional green coffee, and an obligation. The obligation wasn't to market the relationship — it was to honour it. That meant building a supply chain where the co-op partners near Yirgacheffe weren't a bullet point in our brand story but the headline of it. It meant paying prices that reflect the quality of the work, returning each season, and sharing the names and faces of the people behind every lot we roast.

Kesara as a roastery grew from that commitment. We are small enough to know every origin relationship personally and disciplined enough to let that knowledge shape every decision we make — from sourcing to roasting to how we talk about coffee with the cafés and customers we serve.
